The Deep Abyss of Thoughts On Life

Being nineteen is a funny place to be. You seem to be placed in an empty room with no windows or doors because you are no longer a teenager but not quite an adult. I feel like a floater with no true harbor, and the passed few days I have looked back on my high school experience alone and I feel confused.

As a fifteen or sixteen year old, you see college as so far in the future it’s too hard to see yourself there. Instead, you imagine and fantasize about going to the prom with Mr. Prince Charming and wanting to experience having him hold your hand for the first time and what your first kiss will be like. What it will feel like, to be loved and adored by the guy of your dreams.

But, I also saw a clear path for my future. I was going to graduate from a university with a B.A. in English and have my first book published a year after I graduated from school. I would be famous and everyone would read my novels and fall in love with my writing. I would marry a handsome man, and everyone would say that it could only have been fate that brought us together because we were a match made in heaven-- so cliched I know, I know-- but seriously.

Now, I’m not so sure where I see myself, or my future for that matter. At nineteen, I am lost. I wish to find myself, to find how my life influences this world. I don’t feel like the same person I was a year ago when I graduated from high school. Unfortunately, I don’t know what I feel. No one ever warns you about how this time in your life can be messy and confusing. Yes, there are some very fun times, but there is a much bigger part where you are struggling to define yourself in the eyes of everyone else on this planet. Who do I want to be? Is it possible that I could change fate, destiny, and ultimately my future and become the true Alyssa I was born to be? How do I know what I am doing is the best for myself?

There are many times when I feel so alone and distanced from everyone, like I am surrounded by bulletproof glass that I can see out but no one can see me. The “real world”--whatever that really means-- is difficult and you realize things that you wish you  didn’t have to realize as a “grown up.” You have to do things that you thought you’d never have to do, and you try your very best to do the things that won’t give your brain a seizure of regret every time you think of your past. But how does one go about changing what you have been for nineteen years?

9:06 and Funerals

Yesterday was an interesting day:

9:06am
I turned nineteen, which means one step closer to jumping out of the "teen" years which is crazy pants to think I am even remotely close to being twenty next year, so, of course it's weird that I am even nineteen. But I am happy to be one year older and wiser too!

9:29am
I woke up to my whole family gone to the Alpine Days Parade and my Uncle Alan's family in my room. I slept on the couch with Shaelie, but she had left early to be in the parade for Lone Peak's Africa Club Float.

10:06am
I walked into a church and searched for a room full of crying people. Yes, I went to a funeral. It was for one of my best friends, her brother had passed away and so with love and care I went and paid my respects to her and her family. I thought I wasn't even going to be able to enter the room without breaking down and choking up. She was so close with her baby brother that it was heartbreaking to me to see her so upset. I just wish I knew exactly the thing to say to help her feel better but it's so hard. I just hope with lots of TLC and time that her heart will mend and she will be happy again. My love, care, and prayers go out to her and her family.

11:45am
I helped my mom with lunch. We made our famously delicious and nutritious chicken salad with onions, red grapes, and avocado. We put it on bagel slices as open faced sandwiches. They are so good!

12:37pm
My parents, my sisters Shaelie and Camile, and myself left our house to pick up my cousin Brittney to go up to Salt Lake for my grand present: WICKED!

1:22pm
We pull into a parking spot in the parking garage under Olive Garden in Downtown Salt Lake, right across the street from the Salt Lake Theatre.

2:00pm
Wicked begins! Have I mentioned that it is my third time seeing this glorious, beautiful play?? It is by far my favorite. I have now seen it in California, New York, and my home turf, Utah!

4:53pm
The play ends, we get on the freeway and head for Holladay, Salt lake, on Salt Lake's East bench for dinner at Layla Mediterranean Grill and Mezze, my Favorite restaurant (I have only been there twice)!

6:37pm
We pull into the parking lot of Fashion Place Mall to get some take out cheesecakes from the Cheesecake Factory for dessert. Luckily, that way, there were no singing waiters!

7:14pm
I run in to Smith's to buy some flowers to try to cheer my friend up. Seriously I feel so bad for her, I wish I could comprehend what she is feeling!

8:01pm
Shaelie, Camille, Brittney and I all go downstairs to watch Miss Congeniality to end the interesting but wonderful nineteenth Birthday celebration.

10:12pm
I took Brittney back home and ended up talking for a little while in my car outside her front door. It was so fun to have her join my family and I on our little outing.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful birthday wishes, you all helped make me a very happy girl on my birthday. I love you all and really appreciate everything you have done for me up to this point. You are my guiding stars and I don't know what I would do without each and every one of you! Hopefully I really am a bit wiser now, I know I don't feel that much older, but I am!

My Best Me Challenge

Hello lovelies!
I know, I know it's been a while! I really will start writing more frequently. I am going to start writing at least once a week (not that my life is uber exciting right now, but I will come up with something). Not to make excuses or anything but, life has been really crazy in the past year or so with going through my first year of college *yea!!!* and then trying to figure out what is next in life.
Lately, I have been doing a lot more thinking and reflecting. Growing up is.....scary. But, what more scary is not knowing if what you are doing is right. Sometimes I feel like I am always messing up, that I am taking one step forward and three steps back. To me, that is scary.

Right now I have been thinking a lot about my health, and how many times I have promised myself, as well as others, that I will be better, healthier. That I will take control of my life and everything will work just fine in the end. But I have finally realized that while I was promising those things, my whole heart wasn't in it because people, including myself, were expecting a fallout, a failure to succeed. I have had panic attacks lately that have started as a result of visions of me one hundred or more pounds heavier and feeling like I am destroying myself. I don't want to get to that point, I don't want to get where I can't get out, where I can't save myself from the destruction.

It's got me thinking and acting, for the first ever, that I want to truly prove to my family, my friends, my classmates, everyone, that I can do this. I realize that it is not easy, that it won't come over night but I am prepared for a life long goal of becoming the best me. In the next year or so, I plan on running my first 5k, 10k, halfMarathon, and fullMarathon. This time it's real and it's happening. I am excited and ready to go.

Hopefully through this process I will become the happiest, healthiest, smartest, greatest me that ever was. No more sad, mopey me. Right now, it's all about to change....

**Also, I spent last weekend up in Oregon for a family reunion, which was so fun and really nice to see everyone on my Mom's side of the family! It made me want to make a shout out to all my family and friends that read these, I am more than grateful to all of you for reading, it means the world to me that you take the time to look at my stuff. It gives me the fuzzies inside as well as wanting to keep this blog up!

Through the Rising Sun

Life is always hard, the older you get the harder it is. Not easier. The problems you face now will not be the same ones a week from now, but different trials. At the same time, life is always a journey and it needs to be enjoyed.

The last year or so I have been taking the enjoyable parts for granted and singling out the negative. I regret that, all of it. But that is what makes life great. The chance to start a new beginning, everyday. Just as the sun rises, I rise to a new day, a new me. I just hope that I can make a better day than I have in the past.

One of the two biggest regrets I have right now is not trying to put myself out there in the world because now I feel extremely stuck. With no dates, no additions  to my friend group, no clubs joined, and no sports played, I feel I have nothing to show for the past year. There seems to be a hole in my heart as if I lost more than I had gained.

The second regret is that I have neglected writing for so long that I have a major writer's block problem. This isn't just not writing here on my blog but  writing in general (school papers do not count, unless they were really good, which they weren't, so they don't count). I feel I have lost my magic, not permanently-- I hope. But temporarily. I hope the five weeks I have here at my house, doing nothing (as my summer break) will give me the chance and opportunity to let me write as much as possible and get back on my feet, in the right direction.

I want to belong. I want to be looked up to. I want to be loved. I want people to be proud of me. I want to be proud of myself. I want to take control of the wreck I caused with my carelessness and become a better person tomorrow.

Haircuts and Tea

Well guys 2 years and 10 months ago I vowed that I would never cut. CUT. My hair until I was married (don't ask me why) and then I went home last weekend and I was so sick of my hair e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e. that I called Reflections Salon  and made an appointment for 20 minutes later. I sped over to the salon and well, see for yourself..........

4 Days before getting it cut.......

After :)

So there I did it. I cut my hair! SEVEN7 inches off baby! I didn't cry, I wasn't mortified, I actually quite enjoyed it and now my hair is so much more manageable! Goodness gracious it feels short, but wonderful!!

Now for nostalgia and a few musings by yours truly.......... but first I need tea:

Okay, I'm ready ;)

So this semester in college has been really rough! I am drained and I still have four more weeks! FOUR MORE WEEKS!! I can do this! Any who, so as I look back I realize that more than a year ago I graduated from high school and now I am about to be a sophomore in COLLEGE! It is truly amazing how time just flies by, your lucky if you get to see everything as it passes, you know! I had to sign up for fall classes and it's always the most stressful time of the year because you have to wake up at 5:45 am. and sign in and make sure everything is working and then enter the system at 6:00 am. and scramble to grab all the classes you need. It's like Hunger Games for college classes! Luckily I was able to get into everything I planned for, lucky me!!

So for next fall as a *sophomore* I am taking:
Creative Writing
Children's Literature
Advanced Writing/ Critical Writing (online)
Family Foundations
And...
The American Epidemic

I am so totally stoked for fall, I feel I will love ALL my classes! It's so great, my schedule is perfect, teachers I hear are pretty good so I am almost too excited but seriously I am extremely excited!!

I love writing!!

Can I just say that I love writing! Like, you don't even get it, i LOVE writing! The fact that I get to wake up every morning and go to english classes and talk about how to write better, and read poetry and write papers on fascinating topics that I love is the best! In one of my english classes we are writing a research paper on fairytales! Yes, you read that right, FAIRYTALES! It is amazing, I am in a group of all girls, and all we ever talk about is disney's Tangled and how fairytales were before disney! I love it! Our paper has to be close to 12-14 pages long, but we are so excited about our topic it is already about 19 and a 1/2 pages and we are not done and it's about the stories, Cinderella and Rapunzel!! It is a lot of fun too because the four of us girls are not all the same major, one girl is emphasizing in English Education, another in professional writing (she wants to work in forensics, so she always talks about how she knows how to fight bad guys off and kill them* with her bare hand. Then the last girl is in creative writing, like me! So to put those four heads together gets really fun to work with.

TANGENT: Good News! I finally decided what my exact educational plan is! FINALLY! no more switching back and forth between "ideas." I have decided that I will Major in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing (obviously). BUT!! then I am going to Minor in Art with an Emphasis in Illustration and Photography!! I am so happy! they are all the things I absolutely love and I can put them all to use in my career! So I am set with the rest of my future, well......as long as I pass my Math** Class!

Also, I started yet another blog, so now I am managing 4 total blogs, but they each have a specific purpose. This last one though is technically a secret, no one knows about this one because I decided that I needed an outlet where I could put my work and practice making my writing a daily (really trying) habit. So I am putting my writing, art, and photography there. Maybe one day I will tell you guys what the URL is if you are interested. But for now I want this to be where I can go and I know no one is reading my "actual" work.

*She is really nice, really she is, I promise!
**Math hates me, so we'll see!!

Growing Up In Slow Motion Series

Sitting at a table in the Manwarring Center on the Brigham Young University-Idaho Campus looking around the Crossroads listening to "Hey Pretty Girl" by Kip Moore, I realized that life can get to be super hectic but that every once in a while there is a moment that you feel like time has frozen and you are suspended in the air feeling peace sooth deep in your soul and you realize that no matter what happens that there is happiness in the smallest of gifts from God. I find that in this life we allot only seconds to think of the now and hours on the future. Sitting here I figure that that habit needs to change. We don't know if we have a tomorrow but we know we have a now, a today, what are we to do with it? I pledge to  take control of my life and go for my dreams! What about you?

Lots to Say...Not Enough Time

Wow, there has been so much that has happened over the last several months that I don't even know where to start! Life has been amazing! I have learned the true meaning of happiness, and that the only one who decides how I feel each day is me. Yes, I still experience trials but they seem to be much easier to handle when I wake every morning with the attitude that I will be happy and my life is blessed. I think to myself, that I will love life and live it to the fullest. No more pessimist here!! I wish I could share everything that has happened to me since my last blog post but there are HUNDREDS of things.
But I will tell you that I have done quite well in my online classes (I had my first final in Humanities yesterday, I-AM-SO-CLOSE-TO-BEING-DONE), I have had a pretty good experience with the classes, but it did make me appreciate an actual classroom setting. So I'm pretty excited about moving back to Rexburg in two weeks to start the Spring Semester!
Also, work has been so fun! I love working at Xango, I wish I could take work with me when I move but unfortunately I can't. It makes me sad to leave, and this time I don't know if I will be able to come back for a minimum of a year, or never (SO SAD), I have loved working with everyone there, they are all the greatest people, they have become family to me and to say goodbye for a long time is incredibly hard for me. On Tuesday I had HR come to the mailroom to get my manager's approval to start looking for someone to take my spot and they said the sweetest things to me that when I left to take the mail to the post office, I started crying because I couldn't bear to think that I was leaving soon and would have to leave all of the nicest people I knew behind. I have today, tomorrow, and Monday-Thursday next week and then I am done.
I can't believe it's already time to leave again, and this time for a long, long time. But I am still excited for school don't you worry, I have a very full schedule but I can't contain how happy I am about how involved I am going to be! I want to come home at the end of everyday and just collapse from exhaustion, knowing that I worked my hardest, did my best, and loved every minute!! It won't be easy, but who wants easy?? If life wasn't meant to be easy then wanting it easy means you really aren't living. I want to live, I want to learn, I want to grow.
The last thing I want to mention is that I have a friend, Nathan, who the two of us have gotten really close the last two or so months, NO we are not dating (even though everyone teases me that he is my boyfriend, BUT HE IS NOT, I promise you) He has just become one of my best friends, honestly I couldn't see us getting in a relationship anyways, but because he has become one of my very best friends, we do a lot together and I have been so grateful to him, if it wasn't for him I wouldn't get out of the house as much as I have. And I have had a blast, but it's kind of sad that he is leaving for his mission though (26 days left), But I am so proud of his decision to go. He is going to the Porto Alegre South, Brazil Mission. So for his Birthday on March 25th I gave him three Books Of Mormon in Portuguese with my testimony (also in portuguese) in the inside and a picture of Christ and a picture of Christ with a group of children. He loves them, he says that he will give all three away the first month out in the field, haha. I love his enthusiasm, seriously Brazil is in for a treat!
****OH! By the way, I have some surprising news for you, that will be posted next friday, so stay tuned!!****
